The novel's true appeal lies in its zippy banter and witty repartee on vampire lifestyle, particularly in Felix's ongoing partnership with Coyote, a low-rent vamp from the barrio. Felix endures the usual silver bullets and garlic, as well as several very human double crosses and miscalculations, before the story speeds to an unlikely conclusion that exposes a somewhat unconvincing villain. The “Roots,” comprising the first third of the book, introduce the protagonists. ![]() Appropriately, The Overstory is built like an oak, and the book is broken into four sections called “Roots,” “Trunk,” “Crown,” and “Seeds.” The lives of the nine primary characters grow into this organic mold, and the eventual shape of the novel comes to resemble a plant in its maturity. Across 500 pages of lush, sometimes overgrown prose, Powers nurtures a story of enlightened discoveries, social quandaries, and human disappointments set beside the centuries-long perspective of trees. And so it is in Richard Powers’s latest novel, The Overstory. The understory of a forest or the ecosystem of a novel?Įvery forest is full of trees, but it is the trees that make the forest. And everywhere green, green, and still more green. Black mud sucking at boots in tiny pools, surface a-skitter with paratrooper swarms of translucent mosquitos. There were a few aspects of the text that were confusing and the illustrations that were a bit odd and/or creepy to me. I liked the illustrations as well I felt the consistent black and white illustrations except for the stark red/scarlet A on Hester was perfect and so well done. I liked the adaptation and felt it stayed true to the original story including the themes and the feelings of the book. This Manga Classics adaptation of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne gets 4 out of 5 Stars in my book review. They are perfect for reluctant readers, those that don't like to read, those that struggle reading the classic literature, ESL students in high school that are still learning the language, and anyone wanting to try classic literature in a different format. Twins are kind of a “thing” in romance, so I know a lot of readers besides me were excited to truly meet the first of the Mulvaney Murder Twins. I might be mainlining coffee this morning, but I regret nothing (especially since I also get to have leftover pizza for lunch). How excited was I to read this book?
